Dilemma: you want to travel the world, but you don’t want to go broke doing it.

Firstly, the experiences you will have as a solo globetrotter are priceless memories you could never buy. However, we also need to be real. Travel is an expensive luxury and sometimes being on your own and having to foot the bill most of the time means you can be out of pocket more than you’d like.

There are many ways to save money if you put your mind to it. You just need to do your research and plan ahead.

Read on for the best ways to solo travel on a budget.

Be Flexible With Your Flight Dates

If you’re able to be flexible with your dates, this is where you can really save the big bucks. Before booking anything, compare prices with airlines and across date ranges. Keep your eyes peeled for deals that are consistently popping up for your travel destination. Oh, and if you’re very organised and can book well in advance, this is the trick du jour!

Work Remotely, For Part Of Your Trip

You might want to go completely off-the-grid and have no ties to any electronic device. However, if you have the luxury to work remotely and don’t mind doing so, being paid while you travel is a smart way to save.

Travel Outside Peak Season

This is another way you can save a lot of cash. Yes, Euro summer in peak season might give you FOMO…however, if you can allocate your travel dates to sit just outside the extremely busy season, you will be able to keep a lot of money in the bank. Bonus tip: you’ll get to live it up like a true local with less tourists around.

Research Well Before You Go

It’s a great idea to have a list of things you can refer to on your trip. Any meals bought out don’t have to be boujee options—there will always be a cheaper iterations. The perfect example is the iconic New York slice. Yes, you can find them all over the city and yes, most are amazing. However probably the best in the bizz are the authentic $1 slices on the cool corner spots of Manhattan.

Look For Free Experiences

You won’t need to look very far either. Every destination will offer free experiences! Think free art galleries, walking tours and stunning landmarks. But above all, free conversations with amazing people.

Get Around The Free WiFi

Log on to free WiFi wherever possible as overseas roaming can cost an absolute motza. Use this time to send any texts, check any restaurant reviews or look up directions for something. Before you go, it might also be a good idea to call your phone provider and let them know you will be travelling. You don’t want to get hit with any unnecessary remote phone charges while you’re gone.

Request To Have A Fridge In Your Hotel Room

Storing your own ingredients and making your own meals can literally save you hundreds. Especially if you’re heading to a place where the exchange rate is high and tipping is compulsory. Sure, select some nights where you can treat yourself to a nice meal out but for the most part, try to eat hotel cooked/prepped lunches. After a long day of tourist action, head back to your hotel room for a refresher and some dinner and then head back out and sit at the bar for a good old fashion conversation with a local (alcohol not needed)!
